PROSTHETIC DENTISTRY

Dental prosthesis

Prosthetic dentistry focuses on dental prostheses, treating and handling dental and facial problems that involve restoring missing teeth and jaw structure.

Types of dental prostheses are:

Ceramic veneer

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain custom made by a dental lab that are bonded to the tooth. They replace the visible part of the tooth enamel and so are suitable for discoloured, misaligned or chipped front teeth. The colour, shape and translucency of the tooth is greatly improved. Only a small amount of tooth substance needs to be removed for a veneer.

Crown

A crown, sometimes known as a cap is a type of dental restoration which completely covers and encircles a tooth or dental implant. This may be to protect it from breaking if it has a large cavity or filling, or due to discoloration because the tooth has been root canal treated. They are used to improve the strength and appearance of teeth. Crowns are made in a laboratory and bonded to the tooth using special cements. They can be made from various materials. The most common permanent crowns are PFM ( porcelain fused to metal ) or ceramic crowns.

Bridge

A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth or teeth by connecting an artificial tooth to adjacent teeth and therefore “ bridging” the gap.

Post and core

A post and core is a type of dental restoration used when there isn’t enough tooth structure to retain a conventional crown. A prefabricated or custom made post is placed into the root of a previously root canal treated tooth, which retains a core restoration which then retains a crown.

Removable denture

A removable partial or full denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink plastic base which is sometimes connected to metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.
It needs to be removed every day for cleaning.
