Endodontic treatment ( root canal treatment )
Root canal treatment is a way to save the tooth. The purpose is to restore the tooth to good health so it can function properly inside your mouth. Inside every tooth is a pulp chamber and root canals that contain blood vessels and nerves. Endodontic treatment is necessary when the blood or nerve supply of a tooth ( the pulp ) is damaged and usually infected by bacteria through decay, infection or injury. This infection if left untreated can spread through the root into the jaw bone and cause a swelling called an abscess.
During the procedure the root canal is accessed, and using special tools cleaned and disinfected. The aim is to remove the infection and bacteria. The canal is shaped and special instruments and radiographs used to determine the length of the root. Once the infection is eradicated, the shaped root is filled.
The procedure can take 1-3 visits, and is carried out under local anesthesia so is painless.
